You might know them as snails or slugs. They are the second largest group of animals on Earth. Only insects are larger.

These animals live in many places. Some live in gardens or forests. Others live in the deep sea or hot deserts.

Some live in very deep ocean trenches.

Most gastropods have a shell. A snail can pull its whole body into its shell. This helps it stay safe. Slugs have a very small shell or no shell at all.

Some shells spiral to the right. Others spiral to the left.

Gastropods use a foot to move. The front of the foot helps push away dirt. They also have a radula. This is a special part used to scrape up food. Many sea snails use a siphon. A siphon is a tube used to pull in water. They use it to taste the water for food. Most gastropods use gills to breathe in water. Land snails use a lung to breathe air.
