Gastropods are a huge and diverse group of animals.

You probably know them as snails or slugs. They are part of a larger group called mollusks. In fact, they are the second-largest animal class on Earth. Only insects have more different kinds of species.

This group is incredibly successful and has lived on Earth for a very long time. Their fossils date all the way back to the Late Cambrian period.

These animals have a very special way of growing.

During development, they go through a process called torsion. This means their internal parts rotate 180 degrees to one side. Because of this, their anus ends up above their head. This change makes the animal asymmetrical, meaning its left and right sides are not the same. This helps them retract their front end into their shells more easily for protection.

Scientists have studied these creatures for a long time.

In 1795, the term "gasteropodes" was used in scientific writing. This name comes from Greek words meaning "stomach" and "foot." It describes how their foot is located right below their guts. Before they were called gastropods, people often called them univalves. This name meant "one valve" to show they have one shell. This helped distinguish them from clams, which are bivalves with two shells.

There are many different types of gastropods living today.

Some estimates say there are between 65,000 and 80,000 living species. Others suggest the number could be as high as 120,000. They live in almost every environment on our planet. You can find them in gardens, mountains, and even hot deserts. Some live in the deep sea, as far down as 10,000 meters.

There are also 721 known families of these animals.

Some have large, coiled shells like conches or whelks. Others, like slugs, have no shell or only a tiny one inside. They use different tools to survive in their homes. Many use a radula, which is a structure used to scrape up food. Some sea snails even use a siphon to taste the water. This helps them find prey from far away. They are truly amazing survivors in our world.
