Slug

life science Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A slug is a soft animal that lives on land.

Most slugs do not have a large, coiled shell like a snail. Some slugs have a very small shell hidden inside their bodies. This internal shell helps them store calcium salts. Slugs are part of a group called gastropods. While they look similar to snails, many different families of slugs are not closely related. They have evolved to live without shells many different times. This is called convergent evolution.

Slugs use several special parts to move and sense their world. On their heads, they have two pairs of tentacles. The top pair has eyespots to sense light. The bottom pair helps them smell.

To move, they use a flat underside called a foot. They move by making rhythmic waves with their muscles. As they move, they create a layer of mucus. This slime helps protect their soft tissues from damage. It also contains fibers that help them climb vertical surfaces without slipping.

Staying wet is a very important job for a slug. Their bodies are made mostly of water. Without a large shell, they can dry out easily. This is called desiccation. To avoid this, many slugs are active at night. They also come out after it rains. In dry weather, they hide in damp spots. They might crawl under tree bark, rocks, or fallen logs.

Some slugs even produce two types of mucus. One is thin and watery, while the other is thick and sticky.

Slugs have very interesting ways of finding mates. They are hermaphrodites, which means they have both male and female reproductive organs. When two slugs meet, they encircle each other. They then exchange sperm through their genitalia.

Some species, like the banana slug, can have a hard time separating. In those cases, they might chew off the penis to separate. Most slugs live about one year in temperate climates. However, they can live longer in greenhouses.

In nature, slugs play a big role in the ecosystem. Most are generalists that eat many different things. They eat leaves, mushrooms, and decaying plants. Some slugs are even predators that eat worms or snails.

Many animals eat slugs as well. Birds like blackbirds and starlings hunt them. Frogs and toads are also important predators. Even some snakes, like the common slug eater snake, eat only slugs.
