Monoplacophora are special sea animals with a single, cap-like shell.

Their name actually means "bearing one plate." These creatures live in the deep parts of the ocean. They stay in the dark zones called the abyssal zone or the continental slope. Many people thought these animals were gone forever. For a long time, we only saw them in old fossils. Scientists believed they died out 375 million years ago.

These animals work in a very interesting way. Their bodies have many parts that repeat in a row. This is called pseudometamerism. They have eight pairs of muscles to help them move. They also have three to six pairs of gills, which are called ctenidia. These gills help them breathe underwater. They can have as many as six kidneys, or nephridia, to clean their bodies. Their shells can be small or large. They range from 3 mm to 37 mm in diameter.

Finding these animals was a huge surprise for science. We did not recognize living ones until 1952. Before that, we only knew them from the fossil record. Some fossils, like Knightoconus antarcticus, lived during the Cambrian period. These old fossils might even be ancestors to squids and octopuses. Scientists still study how these ancient creatures relate to others. They use new tools like molecular studies to learn more. This helps them see how life has changed over millions of years.

There are many different groups within this class. Some groups, like the Tryblidiida, are now extinct. Other groups, like the Neopilinidae, are still alive today. One living genus is called Micropilina. These tiny animals might brood their young in a special groove. The young are released when they are about 300 micrometers wide. Scientists use many names to group these families. They use names like Cyrtolitidae and Carcassonnellidae to stay organized.

Monoplacophorans might look like other sea creatures you know. Their shells look a lot like limpets. However, they are not gastropods, which are the group snails belong to. They also share some traits with chitons. Both chitons and monoplacophorans have organs arranged in a series. Even though they look like snails, their bodies are built differently. They have no eyes and a very simple nervous system. They use a radula, which is a feeding tool, to eat.
