life science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Sea snails are amazing animals that live in the ocean.

They are part of a group called gastropods. This group also includes slugs. Most sea snails have a coiled shell on their back. Some snails have very small shells. Others do not have a shell at all. These snails live in many places in the sea. They live in shallow water and the deep sea.

Most sea snails move in a special way. They use a muscular foot to crawl. This foot helps them glide along the sea floor.

The snail also grows a hard shell. This shell grows at different speeds. Many things change how fast the shell grows. Water temperature can change the speed. The depth of the water matters too. Food and oxygen levels also help the snail grow.

Scientists study these snails to learn about the ocean. They look closely at the shell layers. The shells contain a mineral called aragonite.

By looking at this mineral, they can learn things. They can predict how big a snail might get. This helps them understand how the snail lived. It is a way to see the snail's history. The shell holds many secrets from the past.

There are many different types of sea snails. Some are very small and some are huge.

One type is called Syrinx aruanus. Its shell can grow up to 72 cm long. Sea snails belong to several groups. These include Caenogastropoda and Vetigastropoda. They also belong to the Heterobranchia group. Scientists use these names to sort them. This helps us know how they are related.

Humans use sea snails in many ways. People eat them in many parts of the world.

They are a good source of minerals. They also provide sterols like cholesterol. These things are good for human health. The shells are also very useful. They have a lot of calcium carbonate. This material can be used to make lime.
