Dromiidae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Dromiidae is a family of crabs. People often call them sponge crabs. These crabs are small or medium in size. They are very special because they make homes. They use living sponges as portable shelters. This helps them stay safe in the ocean.

Making a home is a clever thing that happens. First, the crab finds a living sponge. It uses its claws to cut a piece. Then, it trims the sponge to fit its body. This makes the sponge a perfect shape. The crab carries this sponge wherever it goes.

How does the crab hold its home? It has a very smart way to do this. The last two pairs of legs are short. These legs bend upward over the carapace. The carapace is the hard shell on the crab's back. These special legs hold the sponge in place.

This shelter is not just a piece of wood. The sponge is a living thing. Because it is alive, it grows. The sponge grows along with the crab. This means the home always fits the crab. It provides a consistent shelter for its whole life.

There are many types of crabs in this family. Scientists group them into subfamilies and genera. Some names include Dromiinae and Hypoconchinae. Other groups are Sphaerodromiinae. Many different names like Dromia and Conchoecetes exist too. This family is quite large and diverse.
