Trapeziidae are a special family of crabs. People often call them coral crabs. They live in the warm waters of the Indo-Pacific. These crabs are very important to their ocean homes. They do not live alone in the sea. Instead, they share their lives with other creatures.

These crabs live in a symbiosis. This means they live in a close way with cnidarians. Cnidarians are sea animals like coral. The crab and the coral live very close together. This way of living helps both sides. It is a special way they survive in the ocean.

Scientists used to group different crabs together. The family Tetraliidae was once part of the Trapeziidae. Now, scientists know they are not close relatives. They look alike because of convergent evolution. This is when different animals grow to look similar. It happens because they live in similar ways.

It can be hard to tell these crabs apart. You can look at their color patterns to help. These patterns help find the right species. Different species have their own unique colors. The World Register of Marine Species lists many groups. These include the subfamily Calocarcininae. They also list the subfamily Quadrellinae.

There are many different types within this family. One group is the Trapeziinae subfamily. This group includes the genus Trapezia. Another group is the Quadrellinae subfamily. This group has the genus Quadrella. There is also the genus Hexagonalia. You can find many genera in the sea.
