Coral crabs are a family of crabs. Scientists call them Trapeziidae. These crabs live in the Indo-Pacific. This is a large area of warm ocean water.

These crabs live in a symbiosis. Symbiosis is a close way of living together. They live with cnidarians. These are small sea animals like coral. The crab and the sea animal help each other.

It can be hard to tell them apart. Each kind has its own color patterns. People use these colors to study them. This helps them find the right species. A species is a specific kind of animal.

Some crabs used to be in this group. These were called Tetraliidae. They look like coral crabs. However, they are not close relatives. This happened through convergent evolution. This means they grew to look similar on their own.

There are many groups within this family. One group is called Trapeziinae. Another group is called Quadrellinae. There is also a group called Calocarcininae.
