Dromiidae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Some crabs are called sponge crabs. They belong to a group called Dromiidae. These crabs are small or medium in size. They have a very special way to make a home.

A sponge crab finds a living sponge. It uses its claws to cut a piece. The crab trims the sponge to fit its body. This piece of sponge becomes a portable shelter.

The crab has special legs to help. The last two pairs of legs are short. These legs bend up over the carapace. The carapace is the hard shell on a crab's back. These legs hold the sponge in place.

The sponge is a living thing. It grows as the crab grows. This means the home always fits the crab. This is a clever way for them to hide. Many different types of these crabs exist in the Dromiidae family.
