Xanthidae is a very large family of crabs. You might know them by other names. Some people call them gorilla crabs. Others call them mud crabs or pebble crabs. These crabs often have very bright colors.

Many of these crabs are highly poisonous. They carry toxins inside their bodies. These toxins are very dangerous. Cooking the crabs does not destroy the poison. Also, no antidote can stop the effect. An antidote is a medicine that stops poison.

How do they get this poison? It may come from bacteria. These are tiny living things. The bacteria live in symbiosis with the crabs. This means the two living things live together. The bacteria belong to a group called Vibrio. These small things may make the toxins.

Even though some crabs moved to new groups, Xanthidae is still huge. It is the largest family of crabs. It has many different kinds of crabs in it. This family has many subfamilies and groups. It is a very big part of the ocean.
