Macropodiformes

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Macropodiformes are a group of animals called macropods. They belong to a large group of marsupials. Marsupials are animals that carry their young in a pouch. This group includes many famous animals. You might know kangaroos and wallabies. They are part of this group.

There are other types of macropods too. Some are called bettongs or potoroos. Others are called rat-kangaroos. Some of these animals live in different places. Tree-kangaroos live in trees. Rock-wallabies live on rocks. Forest wallabies live in the woods. There are also small hare-wallabies.

Scientists study how these animals are related. Some macropods are now extinct. This means they do not live anymore. We can see their names in old records. One group is called the Balbaridae. These were old kangaroos that walked on four legs. Another group is the Hypsiprymnodontidae. This group has the musky rat-kangaroo. Many of these animals are still with us today.
