Vombatiformes

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Vombatiformes is a large group of animals. They are marsupials. This means they carry young in a pouch. Most of this group is gone. Only two families are still alive today.

One living family is Phascolarctidae. This group includes the koala. The koala is a single living species. The other living family is Vombatidae. This family has three species of wombat.

Many other families are extinct. This means they do not live anymore. Some were very big. The Diprotodontidae family had the largest marsupials. One was called Diprotodon. It was as big as a rhinoceros.

Other extinct animals were different. The Thylacoleonidae were called marsupial lions. There were also marsupial tapirs. These were in the Palorchestidae family. It is interesting to see how much this group has changed over time.
