Wombats are muscular animals from Australia.

They are marsupials. This means mothers have a pouch for their young. A wombat's pouch faces backward. This way, dirt does not fall into the pouch while digging.

Wombats use strong claws and front teeth to dig burrows. Their teeth never stop growing. This helps them eat tough plants like bark and roots.

Wombats are mostly solitary. This means they like to live alone. They can live up to 15 years in the wild. Some live much longer in zoos. They are quiet, but they can make pig-like squeals. They also hiss when they are angry.

Wombats have a very special way of making waste. They produce poop shaped like little cubes.

They use these cubes to mark their space. The square shape stops the poop from rolling away. An adult wombat can make 100 cubes in one night. This helps them tell other wombats where they live.
