It is the largest meat-eating mammal on the island.

The fossa is a master climber. It has flexible ankles. These let it climb down trees head-first. It also uses its long tail for balance.

Its claws are semi-retractable. This means they can extend but not pull back all the way.

This animal hunts in the forest. It hunts during the day and at night. More than half of its food is lemurs. It also eats birds, lizards, and rodents.

Fossas belong to a family called Eupleridae.

Scientists once thought they were cats or mongooses. Now, DNA studies show they are closely related to each other. They likely arrived on Madagascar 18 to 20 million years ago.

Baby fossas are born blind and toothless. They stay with their mothers for about four months. They are independent after one year. Today, the fossa is a vulnerable species. This means they may be at risk. Losing their forest homes is their biggest threat.
