The fossa, known scientifically as Cryptoprocta ferox, is a slender mammal endemic to Madagascar.

It is the largest mammalian carnivore on the island. While it looks like a small cougar, this is a result of convergent evolution. This means different species developed similar traits to solve similar problems. The fossa belongs to the family Eupleridae. This group includes other meat-eating animals found only in Madagascar. Understanding the fossa helps scientists learn how life colonizes isolated islands.

Physical adaptations make the fossa a master of the forest. It has a muscular body and a tail nearly as long as its body length.

The tail is essential for maintaining balance while moving. Its claws are semi-retractable, meaning they can extend but cannot be fully pulled back into the skin. To help with climbing, the fossa has very flexible ankles. These ankles allow it to climb up and down tree trunks head-first. It can also leap easily from one tree to another. Its feet are semiplantigrade, allowing it to switch between walking on its soles and its toes.

The fossa's appearance is a mix of several different animal groups. It has a mongoose-like head with a broad, short muzzle. Its ears are large and rounded, similar to a cat's ears. The eyes are medium brown and set wide apart. Because it often hunts at night, its eyes reflect light with an orange hue. The fur is generally short, dense, and reddish-brown on the top. The underside is usually a dirty cream color. Adult males are larger than females, a trait known as sexual dimorphism. Males weigh between 6 and 12 kilograms, while females weigh between 5 and 7 kilograms.

The fossa has unique biological features, including its external genitalia. The male has an unusually long penis and a baculum, which is a penis bone. The glans, or the tip of the penis, is spiny except at the very end. Females experience a period called transient masculinization starting at one or two years of age. During this time, they develop an enlarged, spiny clitoris supported by a bone called an os clitoridis. This feature eventually decreases in size as the animal grows. Scientists think this may help reduce aggression from other fossas.

Modern genetic studies have finally solved the mystery of its ancestry. DNA research shows that all Malagasy carnivores form a single group called a clade. This means they all share a common ancestor. They are most closely related to the Herpestidae family, which includes mongooses. Scientists believe these carnivores colonized Madagascar once, about 18 to 20 million years ago. This discovery changed how we think about how animals reach isolated islands.

The fossa plays a vital role in the Madagascar ecosystem. It is an active hunter that operates both during the day and at night. More than 50% of its diet consists of lemurs, which are primates found only on the island. It also eats tenrecs, rodents, lizards, and birds. Fossas are widespread across Madagascar, but they prefer pristine, undisturbed forests. They are more common in humid forests than in dry deciduous forests. Currently, the fossa is listed as a vulnerable species on the IUCN Red List. The greatest threat to their survival is habitat destruction.
