The fossa is a slender mammal that lives only on the island of Madagascar.

It is the largest meat-eating mammal found on the island. Many people think it looks like a small cougar. This is because it has many cat-like features.

These features happened through convergent evolution. This means different animals developed similar traits to solve similar problems. The fossa is a very important part of the island's nature. It lives mostly in the forests of Madagascar.

This animal is a master at moving through the trees. It has a very long tail to help it stay balanced.

Its claws are semi-retractable. This means the fossa can extend them but cannot pull them back fully. The fossa also has very flexible ankles. These allow it to climb up and down tree trunks head-first. It can even leap from one tree to another. This makes it a very skilled hunter in the forest canopy.

Scientists have spent a long time trying to group the fossa correctly.

In 1833, Edward Turner Bennett first described the animal. He originally thought it was a type of civet. Later, in 1939, others placed it in a group with cats. For a long time, experts argued about its true family. It has traits from cats, mongooses, and civets all at once. This made its place in the tree of life a mystery for many years.

Newer science has finally helped solve the mystery of the fossa. DNA studies show that the fossa belongs to the family Eupleridae.

This family includes other meat-eating animals from Madagascar. These animals likely arrived on the island about 18 to 20 million years ago. They all share a common ancestor. This ancestor was likely related to mongooses from Asia and Africa. Now we know they all form one special group on the island.

Learning about the fossa helps us understand how island life works. Most fossas live in humid forests where they can travel easily. They hunt both during the day and at night. More than half of their diet is made of lemurs.

They also eat birds, lizards, and rodents. Today, the fossa is a vulnerable species. This means they are at risk of disappearing. Their biggest threat is the loss of their forest homes.
