The indri is one of the largest living lemurs in the world.

These animals live only on the island of Madagascar. They have silky fur that is mostly black with white patches. These patches appear on their limbs, necks, and backs. Some indris in the north are mostly or entirely black.

They have large greenish eyes and round, fuzzy ears. One very special thing is that they have a tiny, rudimentary tail. This makes them look different from almost any other lemur. They are known as vertical clingers and leapers. This means they hold their bodies upright while they climb.

Indris live in small, close-knit family groups. A group usually has a mated male and female. They also live with their growing children. The females are the leaders of these groups. A dominant female often decides where the group travels. She might even move males to lower branches or poorer food areas.

These families move about 300 to 700 meters every day. They mostly travel this much during the summer to find fruit. The indri is also monogamous. This means a male and female stay together for a long time. They only find a new partner after their mate dies.

Communication is a very important part of their lives. The indri is famous for its loud, distinctive songs.

These songs can last for over three minutes. A song usually starts with a loud roar. Then, the adult pair sings long notes for several seconds. They might even sing together in a duet. These songs help groups talk to each other. They can mark territory or warn others about dangers. They might sing after hearing thunder or seeing an airplane.

They often move to the very tops of trees to sing. This helps their voices carry for up to 4 kilometers.

Many people in Madagascar have special stories about the indri. They call the animal "babakoto." This name can mean "father of a little boy."

Some legends say the indri was once a human. One story tells of a father and son who disappeared in the forest. People later found two large lemurs in the trees. They believed the men had transformed into indris. Because of these stories, the animal is often seen as sacred. Many people follow rules called "fady" to protect them. This means they are traditionally not supposed to be hunted or harmed.

Today, the indri faces many hard jobs for survival. They are listed as critically endangered.

This means they are at a very high risk of dying out. Their forest homes are being destroyed by logging and farming. People also gather wood for fuel in these areas. This breaks the forest into small, separate pieces. This makes it harder for large groups to move around. Some people also hunt them despite the traditional rules. Scientists believe there may be between 1,000 and 10,000 indris left. We must learn more to help protect them.
