The mandrill is a very large monkey from west-central Africa.

It is one of the most colorful mammals on Earth. These monkeys live in thick tropical rainforests and sometimes travel across savannas. They are mostly active during the day. Most of their time is spent walking on the ground.

They are a vulnerable species. This means they face hard jobs like losing their homes and being hunted for meat. Gabon is a very important place where many mandrills still live.

Mandrills have very special colors on their skin.

The red color comes from blood vessels near the surface of the skin. The blue color is different. It is a form of structural coloration. This happens because of the way collagen fibers are arranged in parallel layers. In males, the blue skin sits on ridged bone swellings on the face.

These bright colors help them stand out to other mandrills. Females have much darker faces. This is caused by melanin, which is a natural pigment.

Scientists have studied these monkeys for a very long time.

Conrad Gessner first described them in a book between 1551 and 1558. He thought they were a type of hyena! Later, Carl Linnaeus named them in 1758. The name "mandrill" comes from the words "man" and "drill." It has been used since 1744.

For a long time, people thought they were baboons. Now, we know they are more closely related to white-eyelid mangabeys. Genetic studies in 2011 helped show these family links.

Mandrills live in huge, stable groups called hordes.

These groups can be very large. In Gabon, one horde had 620 individuals. Some groups have even reached 845 members!

Females stay together to keep the group strong. Adult males often live alone. They only join the big hordes during the breeding season. Males are much larger than females. This is called sexual dimorphism. The strongest males have the brightest colors and the most success.

Eating is a big part of a mandrill's day.

They are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals. They eat over one hundred different types of plants. Fruit and seeds are their favorite foods. They also eat leaves, mushrooms, and pith.

Mandrills also eat insects like ants and termites. Sometimes they even eat small animals like frogs or rodents. They are very strong eaters. Some males can even bite through very hard seed shells. This helps them find food that others cannot eat.
