These animals live in tropical forests and savannahs. They are a very important species to study. Scientists know they are our closest living relatives. This link is seen in their DNA. DNA is the code that builds living things.

Chimpanzees and humans share many similar traits. This makes them a key part of nature.

Chimpanzees have a very clever way of living. They use tools to get food and water.

For example, they use sticks to reach honey or ants. They also use rocks and leaves to help them. Some chimps even make sharp sticks to hunt small animals. They live in groups of 15 to 150 members. These groups follow a male-led hierarchy. This means males hold the highest ranks. Most disputes are settled without being violent.

People have studied these apes for a long time. The name "chimpanzee" was first recorded in 1738.

In the 1600s, Dutch scientists saw them in the Netherlands. A man named Lorenz Oken named their group "Pan" in 1816. Later, scientists realized bonobos were a different species in 1933. Researchers have even tried teaching them sign language. This was done to see if they could communicate. It is a big part of their history in science.

There are many facts about how they grow.

A mother's pregnancy lasts for eight months. The baby stays with its mother for many years. Adult males weigh between 35 and 55 kilograms. Females are usually smaller than the males. There are four main subspecies of chimpanzee. One is the Western chimpanzee from places like Guinea. Another is the Eastern chimpanzee found in Tanzania. They are currently listed as an endangered species.

Chimpanzees face many hard jobs in the wild today.

They are at risk because of habitat loss. This means their homes are being destroyed. Poaching and disease are also big threats to them. Only about 170,000 to 300,000 chimps live in the wild. We can see their cleverness in our own lives. They use tools much like humans do. This helps us understand how we might have lived long ago.
