The aardvark is a medium-sized mammal from Africa.

It is a nocturnal animal, which means it is active at night. These animals are quite special because they are the only living members of their group. This group is called the order Tubulidentata. The name refers to their unique, tube-like teeth. Aardvarks live in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. They stay in savannas, grasslands, and woodlands. They avoid rocky areas and swamp forests. These animals are very important for the land they live on. Their deep burrows create homes for many other animals.

An aardvark has a very specific way of finding food.

It uses a long snout to sniff out ants and termites. These insects are its main food. Once it finds a nest, it uses powerful legs and sharp claws to dig. The aardvark has a long, thin, snake-like tongue to catch the insects. This tongue is very sticky because of special saliva. An aardvark can eat as many as 50,000 insects in just one night! It also zig-zags while it searches for food. It avoids repeating the same path for several days. This gives the insect nests time to recover.

Scientists have studied aardvark fossils to learn about their past. Early relatives of the aardvark appeared in Africa a long time ago. One of the first clear members of its group was found in Kenya. Another early version was found in Algeria. Fossils of aardvarks have been dated back 5 million years. These fossils have been found in Europe and the Near East too. Researchers once thought a creature in Madagascar was a relative. Now, they believe it was just an animal that looked like an aardvark. This is called convergent evolution, where different animals develop similar traits.

Many facts make the aardvark unique among mammals.

Its nose is very advanced for smelling. It has nine olfactory bulbs, which is more than any other mammal. The aardvark also has very long ears to listen for danger. Its teeth are quite different from ours. They have no enamel coating. Instead, they have clusters of tiny tubes. These teeth wear down and regrow all the time. An adult aardvark can weigh up to 68 kilograms. Its length can reach about 1.3 meters when you count the tail. Its tail can be as long as 40 centimeters.

Even though it looks a bit like a pig, it is not a pig.

The name aardvark actually comes from Afrikaans. It means "earth pig" or "ground pig" because it digs so much. It is also part of a large group called Afrotheria. This means it is related to elephants and manatees. You might also think it looks like an anteater. However, it is not closely related to the anteaters from South America. It is a very distinct animal with its own special place in nature. It helps the environment by digging and spreading seeds. For example, it eats the aardvark cucumber and spreads its seeds.
