Anteaters are amazing mammals that specialize in eating ants and termites. There are four living species in a group called Vermilingua, which means "worm tongue."

These animals belong to the order Pilosa along with sloths. While people sometimes call aardvarks or pangolins anteaters, those animals are not closely related. True anteaters are part of the Xenarthra superorder. This group once lived in South America while it was isolated from other lands. Today, they live in the New World from Mexico to Argentina. They can be found in rainforests, grasslands, and dry tropical forests.

Eating insects is a very fast way of working. Since anteaters have no teeth, they use a special method to eat. They have long snouts and very long tongues. These tongues are covered in sticky saliva from large glands. They also have thousands of tiny hooks called filiform papillae. These hooks help hold the insects against the tongue. The tongue is attached to the sternum. It can flick in and out 150 times every minute! To finish the job, their stomachs have hard folds. These folds grind the insects like a bird's gizzard.

Scientists have studied these animals to understand their history. Long ago, anteaters lived in South America. About 3 million years ago, the Isthmus of Panama formed. This allowed them to spread into Central and North America. This event is called the Great American Interchange. Fossils show that the giant anteater once lived as far north as Sonora, Mexico. Over time, changes in the land changed where they live. Some scientists once thought they were related to pangolins. They now know this was just convergent evolution. This means they grew to look similar because they lived similar lives.

There are four main species of true anteaters. The giant anteater is the largest. It can reach about 2 meters in length. It can weigh about 40 kilograms. It has a black band on its chest. The tamanduas are medium-sized animals. The northern tamandua lives from Mexico to Colombia. The southern tamandua lives from Colombia to Argentina. These two species have a mass of about 4 to 5 kilograms. The silky anteater is the smallest species. It is about 50 centimeters long. It has very dense, silky fur.

Most anteaters like to live alone. This is called being solitary. They use their sense of smell to find food and stay safe. They have poor sight but can hear well. Some species, like the silky anteater, are arboreal. This means they live in trees. They use their prehensile tails to grab branches. Other species, like the giant anteater, live on the ground. They are terrestrial animals. Mothers must carry their babies on their backs. This is because their large claws make it hard to hold them.
