The tamandua is a special kind of anteater. There are two main species in this group. One is the northern tamandua. The other is the southern tamandua. They live in forests and grasslands. These animals are semiarboreal, which means they live partly in trees and partly on the ground.

They can spend as much as 64% of their time in the treetops. They use their tails to help them climb. Their tails are partially prehensile, so they can grasp things. This helps them find food high above the ground.

Finding food is a very interesting way for them to work. Tamanduas are nocturnal, so they are most active at night. They use their sense of smell and hearing to find insects. They do not rely on their sight because their eyes are small.

To eat, they use strong forearms and sharp claws to tear open nests. They then use a long tongue to reach inside. This tongue is coated in sticky saliva to catch ants and termites. They also eat bees, beetles, and insect larvae.

Humans have known about these animals for a long time. The name for the genus comes from the Tupi language. A man named Joseph of Anchieta first recorded this in 1560. The name is built from words meaning "ant" and "to catch" or "hunter."

This name fits the animal very well. It describes exactly what they do in the wild. They are hunters that catch many small insects.

Tamanduas have many unique physical features. Their heads are tapered and they have long snouts. Their fur is thick and bristly. It is often yellowish-white or fawn in color. Many have a broad black band on their sides.

The northern tamandua has a black V on its back. This looks like a black vest over its body. Southern tamanduas can look different. Some have vests, while others are just light or dark colored. Their tails are pink and have black blotches.

Tamanduas have a complex relationship with the world around them. In the Amazon, some Native Tribes use them for pest control. They use the animals to clear ants and termites from homes.

However, they also face many hard jobs in the wild. They are considered species of concern by the IUCN Red List. People sometimes hunt them for meat or for the pet trade. In Ecuador, people sometimes kill them because they wrongly believe they attack dogs. They are also taken for the strong tendons in their tails.
