The tamandua is a type of anteater. There are two kinds. One is the northern tamandua. The other is the southern tamandua. They live in forests and grasslands.

Tamanduas are semiarboreal. This means they live partly in trees and partly on the ground. They spend much time in treetops. They can spend up to 64% of their time there. They use their tails to help them climb. Their tails are partially prehensile. This means they can grasp things.

These animals are nocturnal. They are active at night. During the day, they hide in tree holes or burrows. They use smell and hearing to find food. They do not see very well. They use long tongues to eat ants and termites. Their tongues have sticky saliva on them. They also eat bees and beetles.

Tamanduas have thick, bristly fur. The northern kind has a black V on its back. It looks like it is wearing a vest. When a tamandua is scared, it stands up. It uses its large claws to defend itself. Mothers often carry their babies on their backs.
