Lion tamarin

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Lion tamarins are small monkeys from Brazil. They have hair around their faces. This hair looks like a lion's mane. These monkeys are arboreal. This means they live in trees.

They use their fingers to hold branches. They also use claws to dig under bark. They look for insects to eat. They eat fruit, snakes, and small lizards too.

These monkeys live in family groups. They often have twins every year. The mother feeds the babies. The father carries the babies on his back. At night, they sleep in holes in trees.

Today, these monkeys are in danger. People are changing their homes. Cocoa farms take over the forest. These farms thin out the trees. The monkeys need thick, old forests to sleep. They can use shade cocoa forests to find food. But they need mature forests to rest. This loss of home is a big problem.
