The uakari is a very unusual monkey.

They live in the Amazon forest. They live in Brazil, Colombia, Peru, and Venezuela. These monkeys have very short tails. Their tails are only 15 to 18 cm long. Their bodies are much bigger than their tails. Their bodies are 40 to 45 cm long.

Uakaris have long, loose hair on their bodies. However, their heads are bald. They have almost no fat under their skin. This makes their faces look like a skull. They also have large front teeth. These teeth help them eat unripe fruit.

Most uakaris have very red faces. This is the brightest red skin of any primate. The red color shows how healthy a male is. Female uakaris pick mates based on this red color.

There are different types of uakari. Some live north of the Amazon River. Others live near the Rio Negro. They can live in small groups. They can also live in large troops. These troops can have up to 100 monkeys. They move through low tree branches. They also climb high into the canopy to find food. They eat fruit, seeds, flowers, and leaves. They also eat small bugs.
