Japanese macaques live in Japan. People call them "snow monkeys." This is because they live in very cold places.

They are the only monkeys that live so far north. Their fur is brown or grey. Their faces are pink or red.

These monkeys live in groups. Females stay with their birth group for life. Males move to new groups when they grow up. Females use grooming, which is cleaning each other, to make friends.

Other monkeys in her group saw her. They started to copy her. This new way of eating spread through the group. Some monkeys even bathe in hot springs to stay warm in winter.
