These tiny primates live in the rainforests of South America. They mostly live in the Amazon Basin. They like to stay near rivers and evergreen forests.

These monkeys are specialists that eat tree gum. They use sharp teeth to gouge holes in tree bark. This makes sap flow out of the tree. They then lick the sap up with their tongues. They also eat insects like butterflies. They might even eat fruit or nectar. They have claw-like nails called tegulae. These help them cling tightly to tree trunks while they eat.

Pygmy marmosets live in small family groups. Most groups have about six members. These groups include a male and a female. They work together to care for the babies. The fathers often carry the infants on their backs.

To stay together, they use many signals. They use smells, sights, and sounds. They make different calls to talk to each other. A short trill is used when they are close. They use a long call to talk over big distances. This helps the family stay close in the thick forest.
