Its name means "earth pig" in Afrikaans. It is a nocturnal animal. This means it is active at night. During the day, it sleeps in deep burrows. It digs these holes to stay cool.

Aardvarks love to eat ants and termites. They use a long, thin tongue to catch them. Their tongue is very sticky. An aardvark can eat 50,000 insects in one night! To find food, they use a keen sense of smell. They have nine olfactory bulbs in their nose. This is more than any other mammal. They also have long ears to listen for danger. If a predator comes, they can dig fast to escape. They can also run in a zigzag way. Their teeth are very special, too. They belong to an order called Tubulidentata. This name describes their tube-like teeth. These teeth have no enamel. They wear down and grow back all the time.
