Springhares are a type of rodent. They live in southern and eastern Africa. Some springhares lived a long time ago. We know this from fossils.

These animals are nocturnal. This means they sleep during the day. They dig burrows to sleep in. At night, they come out to eat. They eat leaves and roots. They also eat small bugs called arthropods.

Springhares move in a special way. They hop on their back legs. They can also make many sounds. They grunt and bleat. They also make a high piping call.

Their fur has a cool trick. It glows under a black light. This is called fluorescence. This means the fur gives off a bright color.

In 1996, people thought they were in danger. Their numbers went down by 20 percent. Hunting and lost homes caused this. But the numbers went back up. Now, they are a species of least concern. This means they are safe.
