Kangaroo rats are small rodents from western North America. They live in dry, sandy areas. These animals get their name from how they move. They hop on two legs like a large kangaroo.

They have very big back legs. They also have small front legs. Their tails are very long. The tail is longer than their head and body combined. These rats use fur-lined cheek pouches to carry food. They use these pouches to store seeds for later.

Kangaroo rats live in complex burrows. These are holes in the ground with many rooms. They use different rooms for sleeping and eating. To stay cool, they plug the holes with soil. This keeps the air inside moist and cool.

Finding food is very important. They eat mostly seeds. Some species, like the Merriam's kangaroo rat, do not need to drink water. They get all the water they need from the seeds they eat. This helps them survive in the hot desert. They also stay in their burrows to hide from predators like owls and snakes.
