These animals are famous for digging many tunnels. They build these tunnels to stay safe and find food.

Gophers have very large cheek pouches. These pouches are lined with fur. They can even be turned inside out. A gopher uses these pockets to carry food back to its home. They like to eat plant roots and juicy vegetables like carrots and radishes.

Most gophers have brown fur. This color helps them hide in the dirt. They have small eyes and short, hairy tails. They use their tails to feel around while walking backwards in dark tunnels.

Gophers usually live alone. They do not live in big groups like some other animals. They can live for one to three years. Some gophers in the wild live up to seven years. Their tunnels often leave small piles of loose soil on the ground. This is how you can find where they live.
