life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Xerini are a group of ground squirrels. They live in Africa and Asia. You can find them in grasslands or rocky areas. They live in burrows under the ground. These squirrels are diurnal. This means they are active during the day.

These squirrels eat many things. They eat seeds, fruits, and grains. They also eat roots, pods, and insects. Some even eat bird eggs.

They are very social animals. They live in groups with a few females and males. Some males form large groups called bands. A band can have 20 members. These groups share their home with other groups. Living in groups helps them stay safe from predators.

There are five types of these squirrels living today. One is the striped ground squirrel. Another is the unstriped ground squirrel. There are also Cape and mountain ground squirrels. You can find the Barbary ground squirrel in North Africa. The long-clawed ground squirrel lives in Central Asia.

In South Africa, these squirrels do not hibernate. They do not sleep all winter. A mother carries her babies for 48 days. She feeds them for 52 days after they are born.
