Xerini

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Xerini are a special group of ground squirrels. They live in parts of Africa and Asia. These squirrels like open woodlands and grassy lands. They also live in rocky areas. Most of them live in burrows under the ground. They are diurnal animals. This means they are active during the day.

These animals have a busy way of living. They eat many different things to stay healthy. Their diet includes seeds, fruits, and grains. They also eat roots and pods. Sometimes they eat insects or even bird eggs. They live in colonies. These groups are like the prairie dogs found in North America.

Scientists have found many different kinds of these squirrels. There are five main groups living today. The genus Xerus has the unstriped ground squirrel. The genus Euxerus has the striped ground squirrel. There are also Cape and mountain ground squirrels in the genus Geosciurus. The Barbary ground squirrel is in the genus Atlantoxerus. Finally, the long-clawed ground squirrel is in the genus Spermophilopsis.

In South Africa, these squirrels have a unique way of growing. They do not hibernate during the winter. A mother squirrel carries her babies for 48 days. This is called the gestation period. The babies stay with their mothers for 52 days. A litter usually has one to three babies. Females are ready to breed at 10 months old. Males are ready at 8 months old.

These squirrels are very social and love being in groups. A small group might have three females and three males. Sometimes, there can be up to nine males in a group. Mature males often form large groups called bands. A band can have 19 or 20 members. These bands share their home with other groups. This is surprising because most mammals fight for space. Living in groups helps them stay safe from predators.
