Its coat is usually a sandy or reddish tan color. This color helps the cat hide in dry lands. The underside of the cat is lighter in color. Some caracals even have black fur.

Watching a caracal hunt is quite a sight.

They are carnivores, which means they eat meat. Most of their food comes from small mammals like rodents. They also eat birds, lizards, and snakes. The caracal is a very fast and agile hunter. It uses its powerful hind legs to leap high. A caracal can jump three meters into the air. It can even catch birds while they are flying. The cat stalks its prey very closely first. Once it is within five meters, it runs fast. It kills its prey with a bite to the throat or neck.

People have studied these cats for a long time.

A German naturalist named Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber first described the caracal in 1776. He used a caracal skin from the Cape of Good Hope. Later, in 1843, John Edward Gray placed the cat in the genus Caracal. The name 'caracal' actually comes from a Turkish name. Georges Buffon proposed the name in 1761. The Turkish name is 'Karrah-kulak,' which means 'black ear.' This name describes the black markings on their ears.

There are three different types of caracals today.

These are called subspecies. The Southern caracal lives in Southern and East Africa. The Northern caracal lives in North and West Africa. The Asiatic caracal lives in Asia. Male caracals are usually larger than the females. A male can weigh up to 18 kilograms. Females are smaller and weigh around 15 kilograms. In the wild, these cats are very secretive. They are often nocturnal, meaning they are active at night. They prefer to hunt when the air is cool.

Caracals have a very interesting way of living. They are territorial animals that like to live alone. Sometimes they live in pairs, but usually they are solitary. Mother caracals stay with their kittens for a while. A mother can have a litter of one to six kittens.

The kittens are born with their eyes and ears shut. They start to play with each other by six weeks old. Most kittens leave their mothers by ten months. In places where people care for them, caracals live nearly 16 years. You might think they look like a lynx. They both have tufted ears, but lynxes have spots. The caracal has a plain, sandy coat instead.
