These animals live in grassy plains and light forests. They need to stay near water sources that stay full all year. Because they are herbivores, they spend much of their time eating plants. They mostly graze on low grasses like sedges or fall witchgrass. Sometimes they also browse on leaves from trees like mesquite or acacia.

They are most active during the day. However, they may rest more when summer temperatures get very high.

Males and females look very different from one another. This is called sexual dimorphism.

Males have dark brown or black fur on their upper bodies. They also have white fur on their bellies, ears, and tails. Their faces have black stripes that stand out against white fur. Males have long horns that look like corkscrews. These horns can grow up to 50 centimeters long. Females are usually a tan or yellowish-fawn color. They are also lighter in weight than the males. Some females may even grow horns too.

Blackbucks live in different types of small groups. There are groups of females, groups of males, and groups of young males called bachelor herds.

Males use a special way to find mates called lekking. A male picks a small area and defends it from other males. He marks his territory using scents from special glands. Females visit these areas to find food and meet males. This strategy is hard work for the males. It can even lead to injuries during fights for territory.

Scientists have studied these animals for a long time. Carl Linnaeus, a Swedish zoologist, first described the blackbuck in 1758. The name blackbuck comes from the dark color of the male's coat. The scientific name, Antilope cervicapra, uses Latin words for horned animals and deer. In the past, many blackbucks were lost to hunting and habitat destruction. During the 20th century, their numbers dropped very quickly. Today, many live in protected areas to keep them safe. In India, hunting them is now prohibited by law.

Blackbucks are closely related to animals like gazelles.

While they look similar, blackbucks have much darker fur on their backs. Some blackbucks have even been moved to other parts of the world. They live in places like Argentina, Australia, and the United States. In Texas, they were introduced in 1932 and grew in number. These animals are also important in Hinduism. Because of this, many villagers in India and Nepal do not harm them. They are a truly special part of the natural world.
