The gerenuk is a tall and slender antelope found in East Africa.

Some people call it the giraffe gazelle because of its long neck. This animal belongs to its own group called Litocranius. It has a smooth coat with two main colors. The back is a reddish brown color called a saddle. The sides of the body are light tan or buff. The belly and the inside of the legs are cream.

The eyes and the mouth are surrounded by white fur.

This antelope has a very special way of finding food. It is a browser, which means it eats leaves, shoots, and fruit. The gerenuk can reach higher than other antelopes. It does this by standing up on its back legs. Then, it stretches its long neck toward high branches. It uses a pointed mouth to pick leaves from thorny bushes. The gerenuk also eats Acacia trees when they are available.

Interestingly, these animals do not need to drink water very often.

People first learned about the gerenuk in 1879. A naturalist named Victor Brooke described the animal then. He used three male specimens from the African mainland. These were found north of the island of Zanzibar. He named the animal after Gerald Waller's brother. Later, John Kirk corrected where the specimens came from. He said they were found near the River Juba in Somalia. In 1886, Franz Friedrich Kohl gave the gerenuk its own genus name.

There are two main types of gerenuk. The northern gerenuk lives in Somalia, Ethiopia, and Djibouti. The southern gerenuk lives in Tanzania, Kenya, and Somalia.

Only the males have horns. These horns are shaped like a lyre, which looks like an S. They curve backward and then slightly forward. Males are nearly 3 feet tall. Females are a bit shorter. A male can weigh up to 70 pounds. A female is lighter and weighs about 50 pounds.

Gerenuks usually live in small herds of two to six members. Most herds are made of just one sex. Some males live all by themselves. These animals are active during the day. They often rest in the shade when it is noon. They might even stand in the rain to cool down. Many big animals hunt the gerenuk. These predators include lions, cheetahs, and hyenas.
