Some people call it the giraffe gazelle. This is because it has a long, thin neck. It also has long, thin legs. The gerenuk has a smooth coat. The back is reddish brown. We call this part a saddle. The sides of its body are light tan.

Only the males have horns. These horns are lyre-shaped. This means they curve back and then forward. The gerenuk is a browser. A browser is an animal that eats leaves and twigs. It eats from bushes and trees. It also eats flowers and fruit. The gerenuk has a special way of eating. It can stand up on its back legs. It stretches its neck to reach high branches. This helps it reach food that other animals cannot.

Most gerenuks live in small groups. These herds have two to six members. Some males live all by themselves. They are active during the day. They often rest in the shade at noon. They do not need to drink water very often.
