Masai giraffe

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Masai giraffe lives in East Africa.

This is the largest type of giraffe. It is the tallest land animal on Earth. These giraffes have jagged spots. The spots look like leaves. They go from the head down to the hooves.

Their necks are very long. The neck is one third of their body height. They have a long, muscular tongue. It can be 50 centimetres long. This tongue can grab leaves from tall trees. The tongue is dark to act as sunscreen. This helps stop sunburn. On their heads, they have ossicones. These are bony parts covered in skin. They use them to club opponents during fights.

Male bulls are larger than females. They can weigh close to 1.3 tonnes. These giraffes can run at 64 kilometers per hour.

Today, these giraffes are endangered. This means they are at risk. Their numbers dropped by 52% in recent decades. This happened because of poaching and habitat loss. There are 32,550 Masai giraffes in the wild.

Many groups work to keep them safe. Some live in zoos in the United States. Over 100 giraffes live under human care there.
