There are two kinds of ground hornbill. The first is the Abyssinian ground hornbill. It lives from Senegal to Ethiopia. The second is the southern ground hornbill. It lives in eastern and southern Africa. These birds are carnivores. This means they eat meat. They eat insects and snakes. They also eat other birds. They can even eat tortoises.

Scientists study how these birds are related. They belong to the genus Bucorvus. This name comes from two words. One word means a raven. These birds are special. They split from other hornbills a long time ago. This happened about 22 million years ago. Some experts even put them in their own family. We call this family Bucorvidae.
