Most live in forests or savannas. They live in family groups of up to ten. Turacos are medium-sized birds. The great blue turaco is a large exception.

These birds have special colors. They have a green pigment called turacoverdin. This is the only true green pigment known in birds. They also have a red pigment called turacin. These colors come from porphyrins.

Turacos are not great at flying. They have short, rounded wings. However, they are strong climbers. They move easily on tree branches. They have a unique foot shape. Their fourth toe can switch back and forth. This helps them climb well. Young birds even have claws on their wings to help them climb. Most turacos eat fruit. They also eat leaves, buds, and flowers. Figs are a very important food for them. In captivity, these birds live a long time. Some can live to be 30 years old. One bird even reached 37 years!
