True parrot

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

True parrots are very smart birds. There are about 350 kinds of true parrots.

They have curved beaks. These help them climb tree branches. They also have big brains. This makes them one of the smartest bird groups.

Most true parrots eat seeds. Some eat fruit, nuts, or leaves. A few even eat insects. Lorikeets are a type of parrot that mostly drink nectar. Nectar is a sweet liquid from flowers.

Some parrots can copy human voices. They do not have vocal cords like we do. Instead, they use a vocal organ called a syrinx. The syrinx is at the base of their throat.

These birds live in many warm places. You can find them in Africa, Asia, and Australia. Many live in the Americas too. Sadly, many parrots are in trouble. People hunt them or take them from the wild. Losing their homes also makes their numbers go down. About 18 parrot species have died out since the year 1500.
