They live in Africa. Some live on the island of Madagascar. These birds are very social. They like to stay with a mate. This is why they have their name. The name comes from a Greek word for love.

Lovebirds have a stocky build. They have short tails and sharp beaks. Most lovebirds are green in the wild. Some species have a white ring around their eyes. Other birds have many colors. These colors come from pigments called psittacofulvins.

These birds eat seeds and grains. They also eat fruit, vegetables, and grass.

Some lovebirds live in cities. These are called feral populations. They may have escaped from people's homes. In Arizona, there is a group of Rosy-faced lovebirds. They were first seen in the 1980s. Most lovebirds live for 10 to 12 years. Females carry nesting material to their homes. A peach-faced lovebird tucks material in its feathers.
