Lovebirds are a special group of small parrots.

They belong to the genus Agapornis. These birds are known for being very social and affectionate. They form strong bonds with one mate. This bond is called monogamous pair bonding. They often spend long periods sitting together. The name Agapornis comes from two Greek words. Agape means "love" and ornis means "bird."

These parrots have a very specific way of working. They have a stocky build and short tails. Their beaks are large and sharp. Most wild lovebirds are mostly green. Some species have a white ring around their eyes. For example, the masked lovebird has this ring.

Their colors come from pigments called psittacofulvins. There are 30 known color variations for these birds. This happens because of selective breeding in aviculture. Aviculture is the practice of keeping birds as pets.

People have studied these birds for a long time. An English naturalist named Prideaux John Selby described them in 1836. He wanted to create a separate genus for them. He thought other placements were artificial. He looked at their structure and their habits.

The black-collared lovebird is the type species. A naturalist named Heinrich Kuhl first placed it in a different group. Selby believed the birds deserved their own category. This helped scientists organize how we study them.

There are nine different species of lovebirds today.

Most live on the African continent. The grey-headed lovebird lives on Madagascar. Some species live in small flocks. They eat seeds, grains, and leaves. They also eat fruit and vegetables. These birds usually live for 10 to 12 years. In the wild, they are often separated by where they live. Some species are divided into subspecies.

Sometimes lovebirds live in places far from Africa. These are called feral populations. They often start from birds that escaped from homes.

In Arizona, Rosy-faced lovebirds live in the wild. They were first seen there during the 1980s. The first breeding pair was found in 1998. In East Africa, hybrids can live in cities. A hybrid is a bird from two different species. These birds show us how nature works in new places.
