They spend their time looking for food there. They eat fallen fruit and seeds. They also eat snails. The males and females look almost the same. During courtship, the male will coo. He will also bow to the female. Both parents sit on one egg. They do this for 28 to 30 days. The chick takes 30 days to fledge. Fledging is when a young bird can fly.

An English naturalist named James Francis Stephens studied them. He introduced the genus Goura in 1819. The name Goura comes from a local name. It is an aboriginal name from New Guinea. The western crowned pigeon is the type species. This is the main bird used to describe the group. These birds can live for over 20 years.

There are four different species in this group.

The western crowned pigeon lives in northwestern New Guinea. Scheepmaker's crowned pigeon lives in southeastern New Guinea. Sclater's crowned pigeon lives in southern New Guinea. The Victoria crowned pigeon lives in northern New Guinea. Before, two species were called the southern crowned-pigeon. Now, they are known as separate species.

Scientists use many ways to study these birds. A study in 2018 looked at their genes. This is a molecular phylogenetic study. It shows how the birds are related to each other. The study found the four species form two pairs. The western pigeon is sister to Sclater's pigeon. The Scheepmaker's pigeon is sister to the Victoria pigeon. This helps us see how they grew into different species.
