It has a flat head and a plump body. Its feathers are greyish-brown with many white spots and streaks. You might notice its bright yellow eyes and white eyebrows. These eyebrows can make the owl look like it has a stern or frowning face. This bird belongs to the true owl family called Strigidae. It is a common bird that lives in many different places. Because there are so many, experts say it is a species of least concern.

Watching a little owl hunt is a way to see how it works. The owl often sits on a high perch to look for food. It waits for a small creature to move below. Then, it swoops down to catch its prey. This owl eats many things like insects and earthworms. It also eats small animals like mice, rats, and even small birds. Sometimes, the owl will hide extra food in holes for later. This helps the bird stay fed when it is hard to find a meal.

People have known about this owl for a very long time. An Italian naturalist named Giovanni Antonio Scopoli first described it in 1769. He gave it the name Strix noctua. Later, a German zoologist named Friedrich Boie used the name Athene for this group of owls in 1822. The name Athene comes from the Greek goddess of wisdom. This is because the owl was seen as a symbol of being wise. In 1841, George Robert Gray named it the type species for this group.

These owls live in a huge part of the world. You can find them in Europe, North Africa, and parts of Asia. They live in places like farmland, orchards, and even rocky cliffs. Some little owls live in the United Kingdom. Others live in the South Island of New Zealand. In Europe, there may be up to 1.3 million breeding pairs. The total number of little owls in the world might be as high as 15 million. They can live for about 16 years in the wild.

Little owls are part of many stories and even money. In ancient Greece, the owl was a symbol of knowledge. You can see an owl on a Greek coin from 500 BC. This is similar to the owl on a modern one-euro coin. The owl is also a very social bird in its own way. A pair of owls often stays together for their whole lives. They even work as a team to raise their young. The female sits on the eggs while the male brings her food.
