The house sparrow is a small, busy bird found in many parts of the world.

It is a member of the sparrow family, known as Passeridae. These birds are famous for living very close to people. You can find them in big cities or on quiet farms. They usually avoid places like deep woods, grassy plains, or hot, dry deserts. Because they love human areas, they are the most widely spread wild bird on Earth.

These birds have a very specific way of looking and acting. Males and females show strong sexual dimorphism, which means they look different from each other.

Males have bright markings like a dark grey crown and a black throat patch. This patch is often called a bib or a badge. Females are much simpler, with mostly pale brown and grey feathers. Even young birds look similar to the adult females. The male's black bib can even change in size as he gets older.

Finding food is a simple task for a house sparrow. They are omnivores, meaning they eat many different kinds of things.

Most of the time, they eat seeds from grains, weeds, or flowering plants. They also act as opportunistic eaters by catching small animals. This includes insects, larvae, and caterpillars. You might even see them eating at public bird feeding stations. This ability to eat many foods helps them live almost anywhere.

People have studied these birds for a very long time.

One of the first scientists to name them was Carl Linnaeus in 1758. He originally called them Fringilla domestica. Later, a French scientist named Mathurin Jacques Brisson created the genus name Passer in 1760. The scientific name for the house sparrow is Passer domesticus. This name means "belonging to the house." This name fits perfectly because the birds are so tied to human life.

House sparrows are very good at communicating with each other.

They use short, frequent chirps to stay in touch with their flock. Males use a special song to claim a nest or find a mate. If a bird is in danger, it makes a loud, shrill call. They even have a soft "appeasement call" to stop fights between birds. These sounds help them live safely in large groups. Even though they are everywhere, their numbers have gone down in some places.
