Tyto is a large group of owls. This group is one of the most widespread of all bird groups in the world.

You can find them almost everywhere. They live in many places except for polar regions and deserts. They also stay away from parts of Asia north of the Himalayas. Some Pacific and Indonesian islands are also places where they do not live. These owls are very important to their environments.

These owls have a special way of hunting for food. Most Tyto owls are nocturnal, which means they are active at night. However, some hunt during the day in Great Britain and the Pacific Islands. They specialize in finding small mammals on the ground. They use their very acute hearing to locate their prey.

Their faces have a large, heart-shaped facial disc. This shape helps them hear better. They do not hoot like other owls. Instead, they make an eerie, drawn-out screech.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. A Swedish naturalist named Gustaf Johan Billberg introduced the genus Tyto in 1828. He used the Tyto alba as the type species. The name Tyto comes from the Ancient Greek word tutō. This word means owl.

In 2018, a researcher named Vera Uva published a study on their DNA. This study helped scientists understand how the different species are related. This work helped change how we group these owls today.

There are seventeen species recognized in this group today.

These include the western barn owl, the American barn owl, and the eastern barn owl. The Andaman masked owl is another species. The western barn owl has ten subspecies. The American barn owl has twelve subspecies. The eastern barn owl has seven subspecies. Some owls, like the ones from the Mediterranean, were once very large or even gigantic.

Many of these species live on different islands.

Tyto owls are very good at living on islands. This is a skill that other owls do not have as well.

Because they move to islands so easily, some island species have become extinct. Some of these extinctions happened a long time ago. Others happened more recently. Most barn owls are listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. This means they are doing well globally. However, some smaller groups of owls with limited homes are more threatened.
