In the wild, they might live for only 1.5 years. However, they can live up to 13 years in homes.

These birds spend their time on the ground. They have orange feet that are very hard. This helps them walk on the earth every day. The males make a whistling sound like "ti-yu." They also make a raspy sound that sounds like snoring.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. Carl Linnaeus named the species in 1766. The name for the group has changed many times. It was once called Coturnix and then Synoicus. Later, it was called Excalfactoria.

Male birds fight to see who can mate with the females. The winner gets to breed with the females. The female lays eggs in a nest or on the ground. These nests are often simple scrapes in the dirt. The eggs are creamy-brown or olive with black spots. A female might lay between five and 13 eggs. The chicks hatch after about 16 to 23 days.

Many people enjoy keeping king quail as pets. They are very hardy once they get used to a new home. They stay on the ground and do not bother other birds. In homes, they eat seeds, fruit, and vegetables. They also need protein from things like mealworms or insects.
