Coucal

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A coucal is a special kind of bird. It belongs to the cuckoo family. There are about 30 different species in this group. Most of them belong to the genus Centropus. These birds are very interesting to watch. They live in many different places around the world.

Coucals have a unique way of raising their families. In many other cuckoo species, parents do not raise their own young. Coucals are different because they do care for their babies. In this group, the roles of the parents are often reversed. This means the smaller male does most of the work. For the pheasant coucal, the male builds the nest. He also sits on the eggs to keep them warm. He even takes a major role in feeding the chicks.

Scientists have studied these birds for a long time. A German zoologist named Johann Karl Wilhelm Illiger named the genus in 1811. Later, George Robert Gray named the Senegal coucal in 1840. The name Centropus comes from two Ancient Greek words. Kentron means spur or spike. Pous means foot. This name describes the birds' feet.

Many coucals have a very long claw on their back toe. This claw is called a hallux. In the African black coucal, the claw is quite long. It can be 68% to 76% of the leg length. The short-toed coucal is an exception to this rule. Its claw is only 23% of its leg length. Baby coucals can also look very different. They have thin feather structures on their heads called trichoptiles. These can be as long as 20mm.

These birds are often very good hunters. Many coucals look for food in different ways. The white-browed coucal likes to find food near grass fires. It looks for insects and small mammals escaping from the smoke. Some species build nests inside thick plants. These nests might have a cover on top. Other birds, like the bay coucal, build nests that stay open. Some coucals have even been seen flying while carrying their young.
