There are two main species in this group. The red-billed chough has a long, curved red bill. The Alpine chough has a yellow bill. Both types of birds have black feathers. They also have very brightly colored legs and feet.

These birds are famous for their incredible flying skills. They have long and broad wings. This helps them perform acrobatic tricks in the air. They can soar on wind currents near cliffs. They also dive and roll through the sky.

Life for a chough follows a very steady way. They are monogamous, which means they pair for life. They also show fidelity to their breeding sites. This means they return to the same home every year. They build bulky nests using sticks and plant stems. They line these nests with grass or hair. Most nests are hidden in caves or cliff cracks.

They lay between three and five eggs. The female sits on the eggs to keep them warm. The chicks hatch after about two or three weeks. After they hatch, both parents work to feed them.

Humans have studied these birds for a very long time. Carl Linnaeus was the first to describe the red-billed chough. He did this in his book in 1758. Later, in 1766, he described the Alpine chough too. An English expert named Marmaduke Tunstall helped name them. He created the genus name Pyrrhocorax in 1771. This name comes from two Ancient Greek words. One word means flame-colored and the other means crow.

These birds are true mountain specialists. The Alpine chough even nests at very high altitudes. It has been seen near the top of Mount Everest. It can follow climbers at 8,000 meters high.

Finding food is a daily job for these birds. In the summer, they mostly eat small creatures. They look for beetles, snails, and caterpillars. The red-billed chough often eats ants. It uses its bill to dig in the soil.

The Alpine chough sometimes eats fruit and berries. In the winter, they often fly in large flocks. They might eat food left by humans at ski resorts. This helps them survive when bugs are hard to find. They are very clever at finding what they need.
